Đà Nẵng

Đà Nẵng is a coastal city in central Vietnam known for its sandy beaches and history as a French colonial port. It is the fifth largest city in Vietnam in terms of urban population and one of the major port cities, in addition to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi – the country's two largest cities. Đà Nẵng is the commercial and educational center of Central Vietnam, with a well-sheltered, easily accessible port; its location on the path of National Route 1A and the North–South Railway makes it a hub for transportation.

Đà Nẵng's history dates back to the early Champa Kingdom which ruled South Vietnam from 192 AD until 1697. The city was previously known as Cửa Hàn during early Đại Việt settlement, and as Tourane (or Turon) during French colonial rule.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Đà Nẵng is located at the central coast of the country, between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It is surrounded by Thừa Thiên-Huế to the north, Quảng Nam to the south and west, and the South China Sea to the east. It is situated within a cluster of other major cities, including Hue, Hoi An and Quang Ngai.

The city's economy is based on a mix of industries, including trade, services, seaport, high-tech industry and tourism. Đà Nẵng Port is an important transport hub of the central region and is the third largest port in Vietnam.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Đà Nẵng is home to several cultural and historical sites, including the Museum of Cham Sculpture, Đà Nẵng Museum, and several centuries-old pagodas. The city is also known for its local culinary scene, featuring dishes such as Mì Quảng and Bánh xèo.

Đà Nẵng's beaches are a popular destination for tourists. The city also has various landmarks, including the Dragon Bridge, Marble Mountains, and the Ba Na Hills resort.

Education[edit | edit source]

The city is home to Đà Nẵng University, the third largest university system in Vietnam, and several other higher education institutions.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Đà Nẵng is served by Đà Nẵng International Airport, the third busiest airport in Vietnam. The city's location on the national railway network and major national roads also facilitates land transportation.
