İlmi Ümerov
Crimean Tatar politician and activist
İlmi Ümerov (born August 3, 1957) is a prominent Crimean Tatar politician and activist. He is known for his role as the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, an executive-representative body of the Crimean Tatars.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
İlmi Ümerov was born on August 3, 1957, in Bakhchysarai, a historic town in the Crimean Oblast of the Ukrainian SSR, which was then part of the Soviet Union. His family, like many Crimean Tatars, faced deportation and repression during the Soviet era.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
İlmi Ümerov has been actively involved in the political and social life of the Crimean Tatars. He has held various positions within the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, advocating for the rights and interests of the Crimean Tatars.
Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis[edit | edit source]
As the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Ümerov has been a vocal critic of the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014. He has worked tirelessly to bring international attention to the plight of the Crimean Tatars under Russian rule.
Legal Issues[edit | edit source]
In 2016, İlmi Ümerov was arrested by the Russian authorities on charges of separatism. His arrest and subsequent trial were widely condemned by international human rights organizations. Ümerov was sentenced to two years in a penal colony but was released in 2017 following international pressure.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
İlmi Ümerov is married and has children. He continues to reside in Crimea, where he remains an active figure in the struggle for the rights of the Crimean Tatars.
