Šar Mountains

Šar Mountains (also known as Šar Planina or Sharr Mountains) are a mountain range situated in the Balkan Peninsula. The majority of the range lies within the borders of Kosovo and North Macedonia, with a smaller part in Albania. The highest peak, Titov Vrv, stands at 2,747 meters (9,012 ft).

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Šar Mountains extend from the northwest to the southeast for approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles). The range is primarily composed of sedimentary rock, including limestone and dolomite. The mountains are characterized by steep slopes, high peaks, and deep valleys, with numerous rivers and streams flowing through the range.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

The Šar Mountains are known for their rich biodiversity. The range is home to the largest expanse of Scots Pine forests in the Balkans. Other common tree species include the Norway Spruce, Silver Fir, and European Beech. The mountains also host a variety of animal species, such as the Balkan Lynx, Brown Bear, and Chamois.

Human Activity[edit | edit source]

The Šar Mountains have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Today, the range is home to several ethnic groups, including the Albanians, Serbs, and Bosniaks. The mountains are also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountaineering.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

In 1986, a large portion of the Šar Mountains in Kosovo was designated as a national park, known as the Šar Mountains National Park. The park is recognized for its significant biodiversity and is a candidate for a UNESCO World Heritage site.
