11-OH-CBN

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

11-Hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (commonly known as 11-OH-THC or 11-hydroxy-THC) is the main active metabolite of THC which is formed in the body after cannabis is consumed. The conversion from THC to 11-OH-THC is relatively high when cannabis is consumed in the form of edibles and it is responsible for the stronger and longer lasting effects compared to smoking.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

11-OH-THC is more potent than THC and crosses the blood–brain barrier more easily. 11-Hydroxy-THC has been shown to be active in its own right, but the effects are not well understood.

Metabolism[edit | edit source]

After ingestion, THC is absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the liver where it is metabolized into 11-OH-THC. This metabolite is then further oxidized to form 11-COOH-THC, which is the end product of cannabis metabolism. 11-OH-THC is more potent than THC and crosses the blood–brain barrier more easily.
