5Spike was a British free-to-air television channel owned by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia (now part of Paramount Global). Launched on 15 April 2015, it was a rebranding of the former channel Spike, which itself was the UK version of the American channel of the same name. 5Spike targeted a male audience with its programming, focusing on action and entertainment content including dramas, reality TV, sports, and imported shows from the US.

History[edit | edit source]

The channel was initially launched as Spike in the UK, aligning with the brand of its American counterpart. It aimed to fill a niche in the British television market for action-oriented programming. The rebranding to 5Spike occurred in 2016 as part of a strategy to integrate the channel more closely with the Channel 5 family, also owned by ViacomCBS. This move was intended to streamline branding and promote cross-channel viewership.

Programming[edit | edit source]

5Spike's programming slate was diverse, featuring a mix of original British shows, American imports, and sports. Notable American imports included series like Bar Rescue, Lip Sync Battle, and The Walking Dead. The channel also broadcasted mixed martial arts competitions, such as Bellator MMA, appealing to sports enthusiasts.

In addition to entertainment and sports, 5Spike occasionally aired documentaries and factual programming, often with a focus on the military or historical events, catering to its target demographic's interests.

Closure[edit | edit source]

5Spike ceased operations on 7 January 2020. Its closure was part of a broader strategy by ViacomCBS to consolidate its television channels and focus on fewer, stronger brands. The channel's most popular shows and content were moved to other channels within the ViacomCBS network, particularly Paramount Network and Channel 5.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although 5Spike was short-lived, it left a mark on the UK's television landscape by offering a dedicated platform for action and entertainment programming aimed at a predominantly male audience. Its integration into the Channel 5 family and subsequent closure reflect the changing dynamics of the television industry, where consolidation and digital streaming services increasingly dictate content distribution and channel viability.
