The AFC West is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, though its origins trace back to the Western Division of the American Football League (AFL) established in 1960. The division comprises four teams: the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers.

History[edit | edit source]

The AFC West was formed during the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The original AFL Western Division consisted of the Broncos, Chargers, Raiders, and the Chiefs (originally the Dallas Texans). These teams have remained in the division since its inception, making the AFC West one of the most stable divisions in terms of team membership in the NFL.

Former[edit | edit source]

  • No teams have been removed or transferred from the AFC West since its establishment.

Championships[edit | edit source]

The teams in the AFC West have been successful in both the AFL and NFL, with multiple Super Bowl wins among them. The Raiders and the Broncos, in particular, have multiple Super Bowl championships.

Rivalries[edit | edit source]

The AFC West is known for its intense rivalries. Notable rivalries include:

  • Broncos vs. Raiders
  • Chiefs vs. Raiders
  • Chargers vs. Broncos

These rivalries are fueled by the geographical proximity of the teams and their historical performances.

Season structure[edit | edit source]

Each team in the AFC West plays each other twice during the regular season, once at home and once on the road. This makes for a total of six divisional games out of a 17-game regular season schedule. The performance in these games often plays a crucial role in determining the playoff standings.

Impact on NFL[edit | edit source]

The AFC West has been influential in the NFL, contributing to the popularity and competitive standards of the league. Teams from the AFC West have consistently been strong contenders in the playoffs and have a significant fan base.
