Abdelmadjid Tebboune (born 17 November 1945) is an Algerian politician who has served as the President of Algeria since December 2019. He previously held the position of Prime Minister of Algeria from May 2017 to August 2017.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Tebboune was born in Mécheria, a town in the Naâma Province of French Algeria. He attended the National School of Administration, where he graduated in 1969.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Tebboune's political career began in the 1970s when he held various administrative positions. He served as the Minister of Communication and Minister of Culture in the 1990s. He later became the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, a position he held multiple times.

Prime Minister[edit | edit source]

In May 2017, Tebboune was appointed as the Prime Minister of Algeria by then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. His tenure was short-lived, lasting only until August 2017, when he was replaced by Ahmed Ouyahia.

Presidency[edit | edit source]

Tebboune was elected as the President of Algeria in December 2019, succeeding Abdelkader Bensalah, who had been acting president following the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika. His election came amid widespread protests and demands for political reform in Algeria.
