Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education[edit | edit source]
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is a non-profit accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. It is responsible for accrediting professional degree programs in pharmacy and providers of continuing pharmacy education.
History[edit | edit source]
The ACPE was established in 1932 as the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education. It was founded to ensure the quality of pharmacy education in the United States. In 2003, the organization changed its name to the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to better reflect its mission and scope.
Mission and Purpose[edit | edit source]
The mission of the ACPE is to assure and advance the quality of pharmacy education. It aims to enhance the quality of pharmacy education through accreditation and related activities. The ACPE sets standards for the education of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, ensuring that educational programs meet the needs of the profession and the public.
Accreditation Process[edit | edit source]
The ACPE accreditation process involves several steps:
- Application: Institutions seeking accreditation must submit an application to the ACPE.
- Self-Study Report: The institution conducts a self-study and submits a report detailing how it meets ACPE standards.
- Site Visit: A team of evaluators visits the institution to assess its compliance with ACPE standards.
- Evaluation: The ACPE reviews the self-study report and site visit findings to make an accreditation decision.
- Decision: The ACPE grants accreditation, conditional accreditation, or denies accreditation based on the evaluation.
Standards[edit | edit source]
The ACPE has established standards for pharmacy education programs, which include:
- Curriculum: Ensuring a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum that prepares students for professional practice.
- Faculty: Qualified faculty members who are experts in their fields and committed to teaching and research.
- Facilities: Adequate facilities and resources to support the educational program.
- Assessment: Ongoing assessment and improvement of the educational program.
Continuing Education[edit | edit source]
In addition to accrediting degree programs, the ACPE accredits providers of continuing pharmacy education. This ensures that pharmacists have access to high-quality educational opportunities throughout their careers.
