Ada Bello
Cuban-American LGBT rights activist
Ada Cecilia Bello (born November 6, 1933) is a Cuban-American LGBT rights activist known for her pioneering work in the gay rights movement in the United States. She has been a prominent figure in advocating for the rights of the LGBT community, particularly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ada Bello was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1933. She grew up in a time when Cuba was undergoing significant political and social changes. Bello pursued her education in chemistry, which later became a foundation for her professional career in the United States. In 1958, she moved to the United States to continue her studies, enrolling at Louisiana State University (LSU) where she completed her degree in chemistry.

After completing her education, Bello moved to Philadelphia, where she began her career as a chemist. However, it was her work as an activist that would define her legacy. In the early 1960s, Bello became involved with the Daughters of Bilitis, one of the first lesbian civil and political rights organizations in the United States. Bello was also a founding member of the Homophile Action League (HAL) in Philadelphia, an organization that played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of homosexuals during a time when such advocacy was met with significant resistance.
