Adam's Apples
Adam's apple (also known as the laryngeal prominence) is a feature of the human neck, and is the lump or protrusion that is formed by the angle of the thyroid cartilage surrounding the larynx. The term "Adam's apple" is derived from the Biblical story of Adam and Eve, where it is said that a piece of the forbidden fruit got stuck in Adam's throat.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The Adam's apple is more prominent in males than in females. This is due to the influence of testosterone during puberty, which causes the larynx to grow larger and the vocal cords to lengthen and thicken. The growth of the larynx results in a deeper voice and a more noticeable Adam's apple. In females, the larynx also grows during puberty, but to a lesser extent, making the Adam's apple less prominent.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the larynx, and by extension the Adam's apple, is to protect the vocal cords and to facilitate speech and breathing. The larynx houses the vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound when air is expelled from the lungs. The thyroid cartilage, which forms the Adam's apple, provides structural support and protection for the larynx.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
The Adam's apple has been a subject of cultural and social significance. In some cultures, a prominent Adam's apple is considered a sign of masculinity. It is also sometimes used in gender identification, although it is not a definitive indicator of one's gender.
Medical Considerations[edit | edit source]
In some cases, individuals may seek medical procedures to alter the appearance of their Adam's apple. This can include chondrolaryngoplasty, a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the Adam's apple. This procedure is often sought by transgender women as part of their gender-affirming surgery.
