Advection

Advection is a term primarily used in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, and environmental science to describe the horizontal or vertical transport of some property of the atmosphere or ocean, such as heat, humidity, or pollutants, by the wind or ocean currents. Unlike diffusion, which is the mixing of substances due to random molecular motions, advection involves the movement of substances by the larger-scale flow of a fluid.

Advection plays a critical role in the weather patterns and climate by transporting warm or cold air and moisture to different parts of the Earth. In oceanography, advection affects the distribution of salinity, nutrients, and temperature in the oceans, influencing marine life and oceanic ecosystems.
