Aerial cartwheel or aerial is a form of gymnastics and one of the most visually impressive acrobatics skills, where the performer rotates sideways in the air without touching the ground with their hands. This skill is also popular in cheerleading, dance, and martial arts, particularly Capoeira, where it is known as "au sem mão" (handless cartwheel). Unlike a traditional cartwheel, which requires the performer to support their body with their hands as they flip, an aerial cartwheel relies solely on the momentum and strength of the performer to execute the rotation.

Execution[edit | edit source]

To perform an aerial cartwheel, the gymnast must first run or step into a fast lunge to gain momentum. As they kick their back leg into the air, they lean their torso sideways and push off the ground with their front leg. The performer must then rotate their body sideways in the air, maintaining a tight core to facilitate the spin, before landing on the opposite foot from which they started. The key to a successful aerial cartwheel is the combination of speed, power, and timing, with the gymnast needing to understand the mechanics of their body's rotation and how to control their landing.

Training and Techniques[edit | edit source]

Training for an aerial cartwheel often begins with mastering the basic cartwheel and building up the necessary strength and flexibility. Gymnasts may also practice drills and exercises to improve their jumping power and air awareness, such as jumping off blocks or into foam pits. Coaches play a crucial role in helping gymnasts refine their technique, ensuring they have the correct posture and alignment to prevent injuries.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There are several variations of the aerial cartwheel, including the aerial walkover and the aerial twist, which add elements of forward motion or rotation, respectively. These variations require additional skill and precision, as they combine the dynamics of an aerial cartwheel with other gymnastic techniques.

Significance[edit | edit source]

The aerial cartwheel is not only a fundamental skill in gymnastics and related disciplines but also a crowd-pleaser due to its graceful, flying appearance. It demonstrates a high level of athleticism, including strength, flexibility, and coordination. In competitive gymnastics, performing an aerial cartwheel with precision and fluidity can significantly contribute to an athlete's score.

Safety Considerations[edit | edit source]

As with any acrobatic skill, performing an aerial cartwheel carries a risk of injury, particularly to the ankles, knees, and wrists. Proper warm-up and conditioning are essential to minimize these risks, as is practicing in a safe environment with appropriate mats and, when learning, under the supervision of a qualified coach.
