Aeronautics is the science involved with the study, design, and manufacturing of air flight-capable machines, and the techniques of operating aircraft and rockets within the atmosphere. The British Royal Aeronautical Society identifies the aspects of "aeronautical Art, Science and Engineering" and "the profession of Aeronautics (which expression includes Astronautics)." It is the primary field of engineering concerned with aircraft and spacecraft development.

The history of aeronautics spans centuries, beginning with the earliest concepts of flying. Ancient myths and legends tell of human flight, such as the story of Icarus and Daedalus. The modern age of aeronautics began in the 18th century with the development of the hot air balloon by the Montgolfier brothers.

The significant breakthrough in aeronautics came with the Wright brothers' invention of the first successful airplane in 1903. Since then, the field has seen rapid advancements, including the development of jets, supersonic and hypersonic aircraft, and space vehicles.

Aeronautics can be divided into several branches:

  • Aerodynamics – the study of the motion of air and its interaction with solid objects like wings.
  • Avionics – the design and programming of computer systems on board an aircraft or spacecraft.
  • Propulsion – the means of generating thrust to propel an aircraft or spacecraft.
  • Structural analysis – the analysis of the physical integrity and endurance of an aircraft or spacecraft.

The applications of aeronautics include:

  • Commercial aviation – passenger and cargo transportation.
  • Military aviation – includes fighters, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Aeronautical engineering degrees are available at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels, incorporating elements of mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering. Training also heavily focuses on the software tools that are used in the industry today, such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing).
