Against Malaria Foundation
Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) is a charitable organization dedicated to the fight against malaria, a disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Founded in 2004, AMF has become one of the leading organizations in the global effort to combat malaria, which remains one of the deadliest diseases in the world, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
History[edit | edit source]
The Against Malaria Foundation was established with the primary goal of providing long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) to populations at high risk of malaria. The foundation was created by Rob Mather following the success of a series of swimming fundraisers called "World Swim Against Malaria." These events garnered significant public attention and funding, which laid the groundwork for the formation of AMF.
Mission and Activities[edit | edit source]
The core mission of the Against Malaria Foundation is to prevent the spread of malaria by distributing free LLINs and ensuring their effective use. AMF works closely with local and international partners to identify high-need areas, distribute nets, and monitor their usage and impact. The foundation emphasizes transparency and accountability in its operations, providing detailed reports on the distribution and effects of its interventions.
Impact[edit | edit source]
AMF's efforts have been widely recognized for their effectiveness in reducing the incidence of malaria. The organization has funded millions of nets, protecting millions of people from malaria. Independent charity evaluators, such as GiveWell, have repeatedly listed AMF as a top charity due to its cost-effectiveness and the proven impact of its programs.
Funding[edit | edit source]
The Against Malaria Foundation relies on donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. It operates with a commitment to ensuring that 100% of public donations go directly to purchasing LLINs. Administrative costs are covered by specific private donors, grants, and gift aid tax reclaim.
Challenges and Future Directions[edit | edit source]
Despite its successes, AMF faces ongoing challenges, including resistance to insecticides used in LLINs, logistical hurdles in distributing nets in remote areas, and the need for continuous funding to sustain its efforts. The foundation is also involved in research and advocacy to improve the effectiveness of malaria prevention strategies and to adapt to emerging challenges in the fight against malaria.
