Agricultural Show

An Agricultural Show is a public event showcasing the equipment, animals, sports and recreation associated with agriculture and animal husbandry. The largest comprise a livestock show (a judged event or display in which breeding stock is exhibited), a trade fair, competitions, and entertainment. The work and practices of farmers, animal fanciers, cowboys, and zoologists may be displayed.

History

The terms agricultural fair and livestock show are synonymous with it. Originating in the agricultural past of many societies, they have evolved into a wide variety of festivals with community-oriented features, held in many parts of the world regardless of their level of industrial development.

Features

In the larger shows, entertainment and amusements are often included. A carnival is commonly included in many shows, as well as horse riding displays and tractor pull competitions. Some even incorporate a circus and fireworks.

Livestock Shows

Livestock shows are a fundamental part of agricultural shows. They involve the exhibition and competition of livestock, where they are presented for judging on certain phenotypic breed traits as specified by their respective breed standard. Species of livestock that may be shown include pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and poultry.

Trade Fairs

Trade fairs are often a part of agricultural shows and can include exhibitions from manufacturers of agricultural machinery, suppliers of agricultural products, and displays from agricultural colleges and non-profit organisations.

Competitions

Many agricultural shows also include competitions and awards for various areas such as livestock, produce, and craft. These can range from sheep shearing competitions to baking contests.
