Air conditioned
Air conditioning is a system or technology that alters the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to more comfortable conditions. The aim of air conditioning is to distribute conditioned air to an occupied space to improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality. This process is typically accomplished through the use of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of air conditioning has existed since ancient times, with many early civilizations using simple methods to cool buildings. However, the modern air conditioner was invented by Willis Carrier in 1902. Carrier's invention was initially designed to improve the manufacturing process at a printing plant, but it quickly became apparent that his invention had broader applications.
Types of Air Conditioners[edit | edit source]
There are several types of air conditioners, each designed for a specific situation or need. These include:
- Window air conditioner: This is the most commonly used air conditioner for single rooms. In this air conditioner all the components, namely the compressor, condenser, expansion valve or coil, evaporator and cooling coil are enclosed in a single box.
- Split air conditioner: This type of air conditioner consists of two parts: the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. The indoor unit, fitted inside the room, houses components like the cooling coil and the air filter. The outdoor unit, fitted outside the room, houses components like the compressor, condenser and expansion valve.
- Central air conditioning: This system is used for cooling big buildings, houses, offices, entire hotels, gyms, movie theaters, factories etc.
How Air Conditioning Works[edit | edit source]
Air conditioning works by removing heat from the inside of a building and transferring it outside. This is accomplished through a process known as the refrigeration cycle, which involves the repeated evaporation and condensation of a refrigerant.
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Air conditioning systems can have a significant impact on the environment. They consume large amounts of electricity, which can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions if the electricity is generated by fossil fuels. Additionally, many air conditioners use refrigerants that are potent greenhouse gases.
