Akamai Technologies
Akamai Technologies is an American Content Delivery Network (CDN) and Cloud Services provider. The company was founded in 1998 by MIT graduate student Daniel M. Lewin and MIT Applied Mathematics professor Tom Leighton. Akamai Technologies is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with operations around the world.
History[edit | edit source]
Akamai Technologies was born out of a realization by its founders that the burgeoning growth of the Internet would inevitably create traffic congestion, as the infrastructure of the time was not designed to handle the volume of traffic that was anticipated. They developed mathematical algorithms to route and replicate content over a large network of distributed servers, which led to the creation of the Akamai Intelligent Platform.
Services[edit | edit source]
Akamai Technologies provides a variety of services, including content delivery, cloud security, enterprise threat protector, and web performance solutions. The company's flagship product is the Akamai Intelligent Platform, a distributed network of servers and intelligent software, delivering over two trillion interactions daily.
Content Delivery Network[edit | edit source]
Akamai's Content Delivery Network (CDN) is one of the world's largest distributed computing platforms, responsible for serving between 15% and 30% of all web traffic. The CDN helps businesses deliver high-performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, by distributing content closer to the end-user.
Cloud Security[edit | edit source]
Akamai's Cloud Security solutions protect against the increasing sophistication of threats, including DDoS and web application attacks. The company's Kona Site Defender extends security beyond the data center while maintaining site performance and availability.
Enterprise Threat Protector[edit | edit source]
The Enterprise Threat Protector provides proactive protection against malware, ransomware, phishing, DNS-based data exfiltration, and other advanced threats.
Web Performance Solutions[edit | edit source]
Akamai's Web Performance Solutions are designed to enable companies to deliver high-performing web and mobile experiences, optimized for any device, network, and browser.
Clients[edit | edit source]
Akamai serves a diverse range of clients, including many of the world's largest companies. Clients span industries such as media & entertainment, software & technology, public sector, and financial services.
