Akiachak
Akiachak is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Bethel Census Area, in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located on the west bank of the Kuskokwim River, approximately 18 miles northeast of Bethel. The population was 627 at the 2020 census.

Akiachak is a traditional Yup'ik village with a rich cultural heritage. The name "Akiachak" is derived from the Yup'ik word "Akiacuar," meaning "the other side." The village has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence indicating long-term settlement in the area.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Akiachak is situated at coordinates 60°54′N 161°25′W. The total area of the CDP is 6.8 square miles, of which 6.3 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. The village is located in a region characterized by tundra and wetlands, with the Kuskokwim River playing a significant role in the local ecosystem and economy.

As of the 2020 census, Akiachak had a population of 627 people. The population is predominantly Native American, with the majority being of Yup'ik descent. The village has a young population, with a median age of 24 years. The primary language spoken is Central Alaskan Yup'ik, although English is also widely used.

The economy of Akiachak is largely based on subsistence activities, including fishing, hunting, and gathering. The Kuskokwim River provides a vital source of fish, particularly salmon, which is a staple in the local diet. Additionally, the village engages in limited commercial fishing and has a small number of local businesses and services.

Akiachak is served by the Yupiit School District, which operates the Akiachak School. The school provides education from kindergarten through 12th grade and incorporates Yup'ik culture and language into its curriculum.
