Alberto-Culver was an American corporation with international sales whose principal business was manufacturing hair care and skin care products. It was founded in 1955 by Leonard H. Lavin. He and his wife Bernice guided the company's growth until 1994 when they turned it over to a second family generation. Alberto-Culver was purchased by the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company Unilever in 2010.

History[edit | edit source]

Alberto-Culver was founded by Leonard H. Lavin in 1955. The company was named after Alberto, a hair stylist who formulated the company's first product, Alberto VO5 Hairdressing. In 2006, the company sought to sell its salon distribution business to Regis Corporation. It reconsidered the deal and terminated it in 2007. Later in 2010, the company was purchased by Unilever for $3.7 billion.

Products[edit | edit source]

Alberto-Culver's main products were hair care and skin care items. The company's brands included Alberto VO5, TreSemme, Nexxus, St. Ives, and Noxzema. It also had a food division with Mrs. Dash, Static Guard, and Baker's Joy among the brands.
