Alder buckthorn
Alder Buckthorn (Frangula alnus) is a shrub species in the family Rhamnaceae, native to Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. It is known for its medicinal properties and its use in the production of charcoal.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Alder Buckthorn is a deciduous shrub that typically grows to a height of 3-6 meters. The bark is dark blackish-brown, with bright lemon-yellow inner bark exposed if cut. The leaves are alternate, 3-7 cm long, with a serrated margin.
Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]
Alder Buckthorn is native to Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. It is typically found in wet soil in open woods, hedgerows, and on the edges of bogs and ponds.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Alder Buckthorn has been used for its medicinal properties for centuries. The bark is used as a laxative due to its anthraquinone content. It is also used in the production of charcoal, particularly for gunpowder.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Alder Buckthorn can be grown from seed, which should be sown in a cold frame as soon as it is ripe. The plant prefers a heavy soil and a damp situation, and it can tolerate poor drainage.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The Alder Buckthorn is not currently considered to be at risk. However, like all species, it could be affected by changes in its habitat due to human activities or climate change.
