Alderley Park is a business park and biotechnology campus located in Nether Alderley, Cheshire, England. Historically, it was the research and development site for AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company. Following AstraZeneca's decision to move its R&D operations to Cambridge in 2013, the site has been transformed into a hub for biotech and life science companies, making it one of the leading science parks in the UK.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Alderley Park date back to the early 20th century when it was a private estate. In the 1950s, it was acquired by ICI Pharmaceuticals, which later became part of AstraZeneca. The site played a crucial role in the development of several important pharmaceuticals, including groundbreaking cancer treatments and other medications that have had a significant impact on global health.

In 2013, AstraZeneca announced its intention to relocate its R&D facility to Cambridge, a move that was part of a broader strategy to foster innovation through closer collaboration with academic institutions and other companies in the life sciences sector. This decision led to the transformation of Alderley Park into a multi-tenant science park.

Alderley Park Today[edit | edit source]

Today, Alderley Park is home to a vibrant community of biotech startups, established life science companies, and research organizations. The park offers state-of-the-art laboratory and office space, as well as a range of support services for businesses at various stages of development. It is managed by Bruntwood SciTech, a partnership between property company Bruntwood and Legal & General, which specializes in creating environments that support the growth of science and technology businesses.

The campus is part of the Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP), a public-private partnership that aims to support the growth of the science and technology sector in the North West of England. Alderley Park is a key component of this initiative, providing a strategic location for companies looking to tap into the region's rich talent pool and research capabilities.
