Early Life

Alfonso Bialetti was born in 1888 in Omegna, a small town in the Piedmont region of Italy. Little is known about his early life before he ventured into the world of manufacturing and design. In the early 20th century, Bialetti moved to France, where he gained experience in the aluminum industry. This knowledge would later become crucial in the development of his famous coffeemaker.

Career and Invention

Upon returning to Italy, Alfonso Bialetti opened a small workshop in Crusinallo to produce aluminum products, which was a novel material at the time. It was here, in 1933, that he invented the Moka Express. The design was inspired by early washing machines, which used a simple principle of passing water through a tube with the help of pressure. Bialetti applied this concept to coffee brewing, creating a device that uses steam pressure to force hot water through ground coffee, resulting in a strong, concentrated brew.

The Moka Express featured an iconic octagonal shape, which Bialetti patented, ensuring that his design would become synonymous with stovetop coffee brewing. The design was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, making it a popular item not just for its brewing capabilities but also as a design piece in kitchens.
