Alfonso García Robles (March 20, 1911 – September 2, 1991) was a distinguished Mexican diplomat and politician, renowned for his pivotal role in the denuclearization of Latin America. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982 for his efforts in promoting nuclear disarmament.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Alfonso García Robles was born in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico. He pursued his higher education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he studied law. García Robles furthered his education in international law at the University of Paris and the Hague Academy of International Law.

Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]

García Robles joined the Mexican Foreign Service in 1939. His early career included various diplomatic postings, which provided him with extensive experience in international relations. He served as the Mexican ambassador to Brazil from 1962 to 1964.

The Treaty of Tlatelolco[edit | edit source]

García Robles is best known for his instrumental role in the creation of the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which established a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Latin America and the Caribbean. The treaty was signed on February 14, 1967, in Mexico City, and it was a landmark agreement in the global movement towards nuclear disarmament.

The Treaty of Tlatelolco was the first of its kind to prohibit nuclear weapons in a densely populated region. García Robles' diplomatic skills were crucial in negotiating the terms of the treaty and securing the agreement of all Latin American countries.
