Jon Ossoff (born February 16, 1987) is an American politician and investigative journalist. He is the senior United States senator from Georgia since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Ossoff was previously a documentary film producer and investigative journalist.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Ossoff was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Northlake, an unincorporated community. He attended Paideia School, a small private school in Atlanta. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and his Master of Science degree from London School of Economics.

Career[edit | edit source]

Before his political career, Ossoff worked as a national security staffer and aide to Representative Hank Johnson for five years where he drafted and managed legislative initiatives that passed the House and Senate. He also worked as an investigative journalist for the BBC where he managed reporters on the front lines of ISIS territory.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Ossoff ran for the United States House of Representatives in the 2017 special election. Despite initially leading in the first round of voting, he was defeated by Republican Karen Handel in the runoff.

In 2020, Ossoff was elected to the United States Senate in the 2020–21 special election, defeating incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue. He and fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock, who won Georgia's other Senate seat in a concurrent special election, are the first Democrats to represent Georgia in the Senate since 2005.

Ossoff resides in Atlanta with his wife, Dr. Alisha Kramer, who is an obstetrics and gynecology resident at Emory University Hospital.
