  1. Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area

Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a renowned marine conservation zone located off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is named after the Aliwal Shoal, a rocky reef that is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The MPA is recognized for its rich biodiversity, including a variety of marine life such as sharks, fish, and coral species.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Aliwal Shoal is situated approximately 5 kilometers off the coast of the town of Umkomaas, which is about 50 kilometers south of Durban. The shoal itself is a fossilized sand dune that lies in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The area is characterized by its diverse underwater topography, including pinnacles, gullies, and caves.

Biodiversity[edit | edit source]

The Aliwal Shoal MPA is home to a wide array of marine species. It is particularly famous for its shark populations, including the ragged-tooth shark (Carcharias taurus), also known as the sand tiger shark, which is often seen by divers. Other shark species such as the blacktip shark and the tiger shark are also present.

The reef supports a variety of fish species, including the colorful parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish. The coral communities, although not as extensive as those found in tropical regions, provide essential habitat for many marine organisms.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

The Aliwal Shoal MPA was established to protect the unique marine environment and its biodiversity. The area is managed by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, which enforces regulations to minimize human impact. Activities such as fishing and collecting marine life are restricted to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem.

Diving and Tourism[edit | edit source]

Aliwal Shoal is a popular destination for recreational diving. The MPA offers a range of dive sites suitable for different skill levels. Divers can explore the wrecks of the "Produce" and the "Nebo," which are both located within the MPA. The shoal is also known for its seasonal sardine run, which attracts large predators and offers a spectacular natural event for divers and snorkelers.
