The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is a statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. It was established in November 1945 with a view to promote development in the country in a coordinated and integrated manner. The AICTE is responsible for proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education and management education system in India.

The AICTE was initially established as an advisory body in 1945 and later on in 1987, it was given statutory status by an Act of Parliament. The AICTE Act, 1987, provides for the establishment of the Council with a view to ensure proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout the country.
Functions[edit | edit source]
The main functions of AICTE include:
- Accreditation of technical institutions and programs
- Formulation of norms and standards
- Quality assurance through accreditation
- Funding in priority areas, monitoring, and evaluation
- Maintaining parity of certification and awards
- The management of technical education in India
Structure[edit | edit source]
The AICTE comprises several bureaus, each responsible for different aspects of technical education. These include:
- Engineering and Technology
- Management Education
- Vocational Education
- Distance Education

Accreditation[edit | edit source]
AICTE is responsible for accrediting postgraduate and graduate programs under specific categories at Indian institutions as per its charter. It also provides recommendations to the University Grants Commission and other bodies for the recognition of institutions.
