Alpha-Pyrrolidinohexanophenone
Alpha-Pyrrolidinohexanophenone (α-PHP), also known as PV-7, is a synthetic stimulant drug of the cathinone class developed in the 1960s which has been reported as a novel psychoactive substance. It is a longer chain homologue of alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone (α-PVP), having an extra carbon on the alkyl side chain, and is a powerful central nervous system stimulant.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Alpha-Pyrrolidinohexanophenone is a synthetic compound that belongs to a group of organic compounds known as cathinones. Cathinones are structurally similar to amphetamines, they contain a phenethylamine core featuring a phenyl ring bound to an amino (NH2) group through an ethyl chain with an additional ketone oxygen group at the beta carbon. α-PHP differs from α-PVP by having an additional carbon on the alkyl side chain.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
The pharmacological action of α-PHP, like other synthetic cathinones, is primarily as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. This leads to an increase in the concentrations of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft and results in stimulant and euphoric effects. The exact neurochemical mechanism of α-PHP, however, has not been fully elucidated.
Effects[edit | edit source]
Users of α-PHP may experience intense euphoria, increased energy, alertness, and sociability. Negative effects can include paranoia, anxiety, agitation, and a risk of addictive behaviors. The effects are similar to those of other stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of α-PHP varies by country but it has been listed as a controlled substance in several countries due to its potential for abuse and addiction. It is often found in the so-called "legal highs" or "research chemicals" market where it is sold as a designer drug.
Health Risks[edit | edit source]
Due to its potency and stimulant properties, α-PHP can pose serious health risks including cardiovascular problems, neurological damage, and psychological issues such as severe anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis. The lack of research on its long-term effects makes it particularly dangerous.
