Alpha Beta

Alpha Beta is a concept that originates from various fields such as mathematics, computer science, and finance. In each of these fields, the term 'Alpha Beta' carries a different meaning and application.

Mathematics[edit | edit source]

In mathematics, Alpha (α) and Beta (β) are the first two letters of the Greek alphabet. They are often used as variables or parameters in mathematical equations and formulas. For example, in the Beta function, which is a special function that is defined by an integral.

Computer Science[edit | edit source]

In the field of computer science, Alpha-Beta is most commonly associated with the Alpha-Beta pruning algorithm. This is a search algorithm that seeks to decrease the number of nodes that are evaluated by the minimax algorithm in its search tree. It is an adversarial search algorithm used commonly for machine playing of two-player games (Tic-tac-toe, Chess, Go, etc.).

Finance[edit | edit source]

In finance, Alpha and Beta are measurements that gauge the return on an investment portfolio. Alpha represents the excess return of the portfolio over the benchmark return. Beta, on the other hand, measures the portfolio's sensitivity to market movements.
