History[edit | edit source]

Alpo was established in 1936 by Robert F. Hunsicker. The name "Alpo" is an abbreviation for "Allen Products," the original name of the company. The company was initially a producer of canned dog food. In 1964, Alpo was acquired by Lever Brothers, a division of Unilever. In 1994, the brand was sold to Nestlé Purina PetCare.

Products[edit | edit source]

Alpo produces both dry and wet dog and cat food. The brand's product line includes Alpo Prime Cuts, Alpo Chop House, and Alpo Meal Helpers for dogs, and Alpo Cat Food for cats. The brand emphasizes the use of meat, poultry, and fish in their products, and markets them as being high in protein.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

In 2007, Alpo was one of many pet food brands recalled due to the 2007 pet food contamination scandal. The brand's wet dog food was found to contain wheat gluten contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in plastics and fertilizers that can cause kidney failure in animals.
