Alternaria alternata is a fungus belonging to the genus Alternaria. It is known for its role as a plant pathogen but can also act as an allergen in humans, causing allergic rhinitis, asthma, and dermatitis. Alternaria alternata is ubiquitous in the environment and can be found in soil, air, and on various plants.

Alternaria alternata is a dematiaceous (darkly pigmented) fungus that produces distinctive spore-bearing structures known as conidia. These conidia are multicellular, with both transverse and longitudinal septa, and have a characteristic chain-like arrangement. The fungus thrives in warm, moist conditions, making it a common issue in agricultural settings, especially in crops like tomato, potato, and wheat.

In plants, Alternaria alternata causes a disease known as Alternaria leaf spot, which can lead to significant crop losses. The fungus infects the plant through its spores, which germinate on the plant surface and penetrate the plant tissue, causing necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. In humans, exposure to Alternaria alternata spores can lead to allergic reactions.
