Alternative energy
Alternative energy refers to energy sources that are not based on the burning of fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms. The renewed interest in this field of study comes from the detrimental effects of climate change, which is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Alternative energy sources are renewable and are thought to be "free" energy sources. They all have lower carbon emissions, compared to conventional energy sources. These include wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, bioenergy, and hydro energy.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The concept of alternative energy is rooted in debates about energy policy. Energy alternatives are often contrasted with fossil fuels. The main issue is that fossil fuels are limited in quantity and are being depleted much faster than the natural processes can replenish them. Alternative energy can also help to reduce pollution and dependence on foreign oil.
Types of Alternative Energy[edit | edit source]
Wind Energy[edit | edit source]
Wind energy is generated by converting the kinetic energy of the atmosphere's wind into mechanical energy. Wind turbines capture the wind's energy with two or three propeller-like blades, which are mounted on a rotor, to generate electricity.
Solar Energy[edit | edit source]
Solar energy is derived from the sun’s radiation. The sun is a powerful energy source, and this energy source can be harnessed by installing solar panels.
Geothermal Energy[edit | edit source]
Geothermal energy is energy derived from the heat of the earth. The geothermal gradient, which is the difference in temperature between the core of the planet and its surface, drives a continuous conduction of thermal energy in the form of heat from the core to the surface.
Bioenergy[edit | edit source]
Bioenergy is a renewable energy source made from materials such as plants and manure. These materials contain stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy. Bioenergy can be used to provide heat, make fuels, and generate electricity.
Hydro Energy[edit | edit source]
Hydro energy or hydroelectricity is the term referring to electricity generated by hydropower. The production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.
Future of Alternative Energy[edit | edit source]
The future of alternative energy is promising. With technological advancements and the world's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, alternative energy sources are becoming more widely used and accepted.
