Alzheimer's Disease International
Alzheimer's Disease International
Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) is the international federation of Alzheimer associations around the world, in official relations with the World Health Organization. Founded in 1984, ADI works to advance awareness and understanding of dementia, support people with dementia and their families, and promote research into the prevention, treatment, and care of dementia.
History[edit | edit source]
Alzheimer's Disease International was established in 1984 by a group of national Alzheimer associations. The founding members included associations from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Since its inception, ADI has grown to include over 100 member associations from countries across the globe.
Mission and Objectives[edit | edit source]
ADI's mission is to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their families throughout the world. The organization aims to achieve this by:
- Raising awareness about dementia and reducing stigma associated with the condition.
- Supporting and strengthening Alzheimer associations to provide better services and support.
- Advocating for policy change and increased funding for dementia research and care.
- Promoting the sharing of knowledge and best practices among member associations.
Activities[edit | edit source]
ADI engages in a variety of activities to fulfill its mission, including:
- Organizing the annual Alzheimer's Disease International Conference, which brings together experts, researchers, and advocates to discuss the latest developments in dementia care and research.
- Publishing the World Alzheimer Report, which provides comprehensive data and analysis on the global impact of dementia.
- Coordinating World Alzheimer's Month, an international campaign held every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia.
- Providing training and resources to member associations to enhance their capacity to support people with dementia and their families.
Global Impact[edit | edit source]
ADI plays a crucial role in shaping global dementia policy and advocacy. The organization collaborates with international bodies such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations to influence policy and promote the inclusion of dementia in global health agendas. ADI's efforts have contributed to the adoption of the Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response to Dementia 2017-2025 by the World Health Assembly.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in ADI is open to national Alzheimer associations that are committed to supporting people with dementia and their families. Member associations benefit from access to a global network of resources, expertise, and support. ADI provides a platform for members to share experiences, collaborate on projects, and advocate for change at both national and international levels.
