The gills underneath the cap are white and free, meaning they do not attach to the stem. The stem is white and may have a bulbous base.

This species is commonly found in hardwood forests, particularly in association with oak trees. It is known to fruit in late summer to early fall. Amanita cokeri is primarily distributed in the eastern United States, including states such as North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
