Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales. It is a valuable ingredient in the perfume industry, where it is used as a fixative to help scents last longer on the skin.

Formation[edit | edit source]

Ambergris is formed in the digestive system of sperm whales when they consume squid, their primary food source. The squid beaks and other hard, indigestible parts of their prey irritate the whale's digestive system, causing it to produce a waxy substance to coat and protect the lining of the stomach. Over time, this substance hardens and is expelled by the whale as a mass of fecal matter.

Ambergris is typically gray or black in color and has a waxy, soft texture. It is often described as having a musky, earthy scent that is prized by perfumers for its ability to enhance and extend the life of fragrances.
