The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is a professional medical association of ophthalmologists in the United States. The AAO is dedicated to advancing the lifelong learning and professional interests of ophthalmologists to ensure that the public can obtain the best possible eye care.
History[edit | edit source]
The AAO was founded in 1896, originally as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (AAOO). In 1979, the two specialties separated, and the organization became the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The AAO has since grown to become a leading authority in the field of ophthalmology, providing education, advocacy, and practice management services to its members.
Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]
The mission of the AAO is to protect sight and empower lives by serving as an advocate for patients and the public, leading ophthalmic education, and advancing the profession of ophthalmology. The Academy's goals include:
- Promoting the highest quality of eye care.
- Providing comprehensive educational resources for ophthalmologists.
- Advocating for policies that improve patient care and access to ophthalmic services.
- Supporting research and innovation in the field of ophthalmology.
Educational Programs[edit | edit source]
The AAO offers a wide range of educational programs and resources for ophthalmologists, including:

- The Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC), a comprehensive series of textbooks covering the entire field of ophthalmology.
Advocacy and Public Policy[edit | edit source]
The AAO actively engages in advocacy efforts to influence public policy and legislation affecting ophthalmology and patient care. The Academy works with lawmakers, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to promote policies that ensure access to quality eye care and support the practice of ophthalmology.
Research and Innovation[edit | edit source]
The AAO supports research and innovation through various initiatives, including:
- The American Academy of Ophthalmology Foundation, which funds research grants and awards to advance the science and practice of ophthalmology.
- Collaborations with other organizations to promote clinical trials and studies that improve patient outcomes.
