American Airlines is a major American airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. It is the world's largest airline when measured by fleet size, scheduled passengers carried, and revenue passenger mile. American, together with its regional partners and affiliates, operates an extensive international and domestic network with almost 6,800 flights per day to nearly 350 destinations in more than 50 countries.

History

American Airlines was founded on April 15, 1926, as a mail carrier under the name American Airways. It was formed from a conglomeration of 82 small airlines through acquisitions and mergers. The airline commenced passenger services on June 25, 1936.

In 1934, American Airways was acquired by E. L. Cord, who renamed it American Airlines. The airline expanded rapidly, introducing innovations such as the first transcontinental flights and the first airline to hire an African-American pilot, David Harris.

Operations

American Airlines operates out of ten hubs, with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport being its largest. The airline's frequent flyer program, AAdvantage, is one of the largest loyalty programs in the world. American is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance, which allows it to offer more extensive service through code-sharing agreements with other member airlines.

Fleet

As of 2021, American Airlines operates a fleet of 891 aircraft, primarily composed of Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 series aircraft. The airline has also placed orders for new aircraft to modernize its fleet and improve fuel efficiency.

Destinations

American Airlines serves nearly 350 destinations in more than 50 countries. The airline's extensive network includes major international destinations in Europe, Asia, South America, and Oceania.

Corporate Affairs

American Airlines is a subsidiary of the American Airlines Group, which was formed in 2013 following the merger of American Airlines and US Airways. The airline's headquarters are located in Fort Worth, Texas.
