American Animal Hospital Association[edit | edit source]

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is a non-profit organization in the United States that accredits companion animal hospitals. Established in 1933, the AAHA is respected internationally for its standards in veterinary practices and quality pet care.

History[edit | edit source]

The AAHA was founded in 1933, during a time when veterinary medicine was still in its infancy. The association was created to provide standards for veterinary practices and pet hospitals, which were not yet regulated.

Accreditation[edit | edit source]

The AAHA sets the standard for quality veterinary care. Hospitals that meet these standards are accredited. The accreditation process involves a comprehensive evaluation that covers more than 900 standards of veterinary care. This includes patient care, pain management, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, medical records, cleanliness, emergency services, dental care, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, and continuing education.

Standards[edit | edit source]

The AAHA has developed a series of guidelines to provide a framework for veterinary practices. These guidelines cover a wide range of topics, including anesthesia, dentistry, pain management, and preventive healthcare.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the AAHA is voluntary. Veterinarians can choose to have their hospitals accredited by the AAHA to demonstrate their commitment to excellence in small animal care.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The AAHA has had a significant impact on the field of veterinary medicine. The association's standards and guidelines have improved the quality of care for companion animals and have been adopted by veterinary practices worldwide.
