History

The American Legation in Tangier was established in 1821 when Sultan Moulay Suliman of Morocco gifted the building to the United States. This act was a gesture of goodwill, as Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States in 1777. The legation served as the United States diplomatic mission to Morocco until 1956, when Morocco gained independence and the U.S. Embassy was moved to Rabat.

During its time as a legation, the building was a center of diplomatic activity and played a significant role in U.S.-Moroccan relations. It was also involved in various historical events, including the Tangier Crisis of 1905.

Architecture

The architecture of the American Legation reflects a blend of Moroccan and American styles.
