The American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) is a sub-organization of the American Psychological Association (APA) that represents the interests of graduate students in psychology. APAGS provides a platform for students to engage with the broader psychological community, offering resources, advocacy, and opportunities for professional development.

History[edit | edit source]

APAGS was established in 1988 to address the unique needs and concerns of graduate students in psychology. Recognizing the importance of supporting future psychologists, the APA created APAGS to ensure that students have a voice in the association and access to resources that can aid in their academic and professional journeys.

Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]

The mission of APAGS is to "build a better future for psychology by serving as a united voice to enrich and advocate for graduate student development." The organization aims to:

  • Advocate for the needs and interests of psychology graduate students.
  • Provide resources and support for academic and professional development.
  • Foster a sense of community among psychology students.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion within the field of psychology.

Structure[edit | edit source]

APAGS is governed by a committee of elected officers, including a chair, chair-elect, and various subcommittee chairs. These leaders work together to implement initiatives and programs that align with the organization's mission. APAGS also collaborates with other divisions and committees within the APA to address issues relevant to graduate students.

Programs and Initiatives[edit | edit source]

APAGS offers a variety of programs and initiatives designed to support graduate students in psychology:

  • Advocacy and Policy: APAGS actively engages in advocacy efforts to influence policies that impact graduate education and training in psychology.
  • Professional Development: The organization provides workshops, webinars, and resources to help students develop skills necessary for their careers.
  • Networking Opportunities: APAGS hosts events and forums that allow students to connect with peers and professionals in the field.
  • Diversity Initiatives: APAGS is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion, offering resources and support for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in APAGS is open to all graduate students who are members of the APA. Members receive access to a range of benefits, including subscriptions to relevant publications, discounts on conference registration, and eligibility for awards and grants.
