American Student Dental Association
American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation, and advocacy.
History[edit | edit source]
The American Student Dental Association was established in 1970 when two student organizations, the National Student Dental Association and the Student American Dental Association, merged. The organization has grown significantly since its inception, now representing over 90% of all dental students in the United States.
Structure[edit | edit source]
ASDA is governed by a Board of Trustees, which includes the president, vice president, secretary/treasurer, and trustees from each of the 11 districts. The House of Delegates, ASDA's legislative body, meets annually to set policy and direction for the organization.
Activities[edit | edit source]
ASDA's activities include advocating for issues that affect dental students and the profession of dentistry, providing opportunities for leadership development, promoting ethical decision-making, and offering resources for academic and career planning. The association also publishes a monthly journal, Mouthing Off, and a quarterly magazine, Contour.
Advocacy[edit | edit source]
ASDA is known for its advocacy efforts on behalf of dental students and the dental profession. The association lobbies for policies and legislation that impact dental education, dental research, and the practice of dentistry. Key issues include student debt, licensure reform, and access to dental care.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in ASDA is open to any student enrolled in an accredited U.S. dental school. Members receive a range of benefits, including access to educational resources, networking opportunities, and discounts on dental products and services.
