Amherst is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. It is the most populous town in the state of New York, excluding the towns in New York City.

Amherst was established in 1818 and named after Lord Jeffery Amherst, a British Army officer. The town has a rich history, with several historic sites and landmarks.
