Anatoli Bugorski[edit | edit source]

Anatoli Petrovich Bugorski (born June 25, 1942) is a Russian scientist who is known for surviving an accident in which a high-energy particle accelerator beam passed through his brain. This incident occurred on July 13, 1978, at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, Russia.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Anatoli Bugorski was born in the Soviet Union. He pursued a career in physics, eventually becoming a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics. His work involved the Synchrotron U-70, a particle accelerator used for high-energy physics experiments.

The Accident[edit | edit source]

On July 13, 1978, Bugorski was working on the Synchrotron U-70 when a safety mechanism failed, and he accidentally leaned into the path of the proton beam. The beam entered the back of his head and exited near his nose, passing through his brain.

Immediate Effects[edit | edit source]

Bugorski reported seeing a flash "brighter than a thousand suns" but did not feel any pain. The left side of his face swelled up beyond recognition, and over the following days, the skin began to peel off, revealing the path the beam had taken.

Medical Treatment[edit | edit source]

Despite the severity of the accident, Bugorski was able to continue his work and complete his PhD. He was treated at a Moscow hospital, where doctors expected him to die from radiation exposure. However, he survived, although he lost hearing in his left ear and experienced paralysis on the left side of his face.

Later Life[edit | edit source]

After the accident, Bugorski continued to work as a physicist and participated in various research projects. He has lived with the long-term effects of the radiation exposure, including occasional seizures and fatigue.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Anatoli Bugorski's survival and recovery from such a high dose of radiation is considered remarkable. His case has been studied in the context of radiation exposure and its effects on the human body.
