Ancient Romans
Ancient Romans refers to the inhabitants of the city of Rome and the territories under its control during the period known as Ancient Rome, which spanned from the founding of the city in the 8th century BC to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Ancient Rome is typically divided into three distinct periods: the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The Roman Kingdom was the earliest period, during which Rome was ruled by kings. The Republic was established in the 6th century BC following a popular uprising, and it was during this period that Rome expanded its territories across the Italian peninsula. The Empire began in the 1st century BC with the rise of Julius Caesar and later Augustus, and it marked the peak of Rome's power and influence.
Society[edit | edit source]
Ancient Roman society was highly stratified, with a clear distinction between the Patricians (nobility) and the Plebeians (commoners). The Patricians were the ruling class, while the Plebeians were the working class. In addition to these two main classes, there were also slaves, who were considered property rather than citizens.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The culture of Ancient Rome was heavily influenced by the Etruscans and the Greeks, and it had a profound impact on the development of Western civilization. Roman contributions to architecture, law, language, and literature continue to be studied and admired to this day.
Religion[edit | edit source]
Religion in Ancient Rome was polytheistic, with a pantheon of gods and goddesses headed by Jupiter. The Romans also practiced Imperial cult, a form of state religion in which the emperor was worshipped as a divine figure.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The legacy of Ancient Rome is vast and enduring. Its influence can be seen in modern Western legal and political systems, architecture, literature, and language. The Latin language, although no longer spoken, remains the basis of the Romance languages and is used in scientific and legal terminology.
