Andrew Southcott
Andrew Southcott (born 15 October 1968) is an Australian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1996 to 2016. He represented the Division of Boothby in South Australia for the Liberal Party of Australia.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Southcott was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He attended St Peter's College and later studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Adelaide.
Medical career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Southcott worked as a general practitioner. His medical background influenced his political career, particularly in areas related to health policy.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Southcott was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1996 federal election, representing the Division of Boothby. He succeeded John Bannon and held the seat until his retirement in 2016.
During his time in parliament, Southcott served on various committees, including the Standing Committee on Health and Ageing and the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. He was also the Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and Ageing from 2010 to 2013.
Southcott was known for his advocacy on health issues, including mental health and aged care. He played a significant role in shaping health policy within the Liberal Party and contributed to various health-related legislative initiatives.
Retirement[edit | edit source]
Southcott announced his retirement from politics in 2015, and he did not contest the 2016 federal election. After leaving politics, he returned to the medical field and continued to contribute to health policy discussions.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Southcott is married and has three children. He is an active member of his local community and continues to reside in Adelaide.
