Anton Jervell (1901–1987) was a prominent Norwegian physician and cardiologist, best known for his co-discovery of the Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart and hearing.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Anton Jervell was born in Norway in 1901. He pursued his medical education at the University of Oslo, where he developed a keen interest in cardiology. After completing his medical degree, Jervell continued his studies and research in the field of cardiology, focusing on congenital heart conditions.
Career[edit | edit source]
Jervell began his medical career at the Rikshospitalet in Oslo, where he worked alongside other leading cardiologists of his time. His work primarily involved the study of cardiac arrhythmias and congenital heart defects. Jervell's dedication to his field led to significant advancements in the understanding of genetic heart disorders.
Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Syndrome[edit | edit source]
In 1957, Anton Jervell, along with his colleague Fred Lange-Nielsen, published a groundbreaking paper describing a new syndrome characterized by congenital deafness and a prolonged QT interval on the electrocardiogram (ECG). This condition, now known as Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome, is a type of long QT syndrome that is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. It is associated with mutations in the KCNQ1 and KCNE1 genes, which affect cardiac ion channels.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Anton Jervell's contributions to cardiology, particularly in the field of genetic heart disorders, have had a lasting impact on medical research and practice. His work laid the foundation for further studies into the genetic basis of cardiac arrhythmias and has helped improve the diagnosis and management of patients with these conditions.
