Apples to apples

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Apples to Apples is a party game originally published by Out of the Box Publishing, and now by Mattel. The game's primary objective is to win the most rounds by playing a Red Apple card from one's hand to best match that round's communal Green Apple card as chosen by that round's judging player. The game is designed for four to ten players and is recommended for players ages 12 and up.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Each player starts with seven Red Apple cards, each featuring a noun. A player is chosen to be the first judge and plays a Green Apple card, which contains an adjective. The other players select from their hand the Red Apple card that they think best matches the Green Apple card's adjective and pass it face down to the judge. The judge then evaluates all submitted Red Apple cards and decides which is the best match to the Green Apple card, considering factors like humor, creativity, or personal preference. The player who submitted the chosen Red Apple card wins the round and collects the Green Apple card as a point. The role of the judge rotates, and play continues until a player reaches a predetermined number of points, typically four to eight, depending on the number of players.

Variations[edit | edit source]

Several expansions and variations of Apples to Apples have been released, adding new Red and Green Apple cards to the game or introducing new rules. Notable variations include Apples to Apples Junior, which is tailored for younger players with simpler words, and Apples to Apples: Big Picture, which uses images on the Red Apple cards instead of words.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Apples to Apples has been well-received for its simplicity, humor, and the social interaction it encourages. It has won numerous awards, including the Mensa Select seal and the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval. The game is praised for its ability to appeal to a wide range of ages and for being accessible to players of different skill levels.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

The game has had a significant cultural impact, becoming a staple at parties and family gatherings. It has also influenced the development of similar party games that combine the elements of humor, creativity, and player interaction.
