Area code 917 is a telephone numbering plan area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), assigned to the boroughs of Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Brooklyn, as well as the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. It was the first overlay area code in the NANP when it was established in 1992.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) introduced area code 917 on February 4, 1992, as the first overlay area code in the NANP. It was initially intended to serve the entire city of New York City, but its use was later restricted to the boroughs of Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Brooklyn, as well as the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.

Area code 917 covers the boroughs of Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Brooklyn, as well as the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. It overlays with area codes 212, 646, and 332 in Manhattan, and with area codes 718, 347, and 929 in the other boroughs.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Area code 917 is used for both landline and mobile phone numbers. It was originally introduced to provide additional phone numbers for the city of New York, which was running out of available numbers in the 212 and 718 area codes.
