Area codes 610 and 484

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Area codes 610 and 484 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the eastern and southeastern regions of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The numbering plan area includes the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Reading. It also includes the majority of the Delaware Valley, including most of Philadelphia's suburbs and even parts of the city itself.

History[edit | edit source]

The Area code 215 was split on January 8, 1994, when area code 610 was created. At the time, it was part of a conservation measure for the NANP during a time when phone numbers were in high demand. This was intended to be a long-term solution. However, within only two years, 610 was already close to exhaustion due to the proliferation of cell phones, pagers, and fax machines.

The supply of numbers was further limited because the entire state of Delaware is part of the Philadelphia LATA, meaning several numbers in Delaware's Area code 302 weren't available for use. As a result, Area code 484 was overlaid onto 610 in 1999.

Geographic Coverage[edit | edit source]

Area codes 610 and 484 cover the eastern and southeastern regions of Pennsylvania, including the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Reading. They also cover the majority of the Delaware Valley, including most of Philadelphia's suburbs and even parts of the city itself.
