Arizmendi Bakery was established in 1997 in the North Oakland neighborhood of Oakland, California. It was inspired by the success of the Cheese Board Collective, another worker-owned cooperative bakery located in Berkeley, California.
The bakery operates under the principles of the Mondragon Corporation, which emphasizes democratic decision-making and shared ownership among its workers. This cooperative model allows the employees to have a say in the bakery's operations and share in its profits.
