Armour Thyroid
Armour Thyroid is a natural desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) medication made from porcine (pig) thyroid glands. It is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Armour Thyroid provides both of the primary thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which are essential for regulating the body's metabolic rate. It is different from synthetic thyroid medications, which may only contain T4 (such as Levothyroxine) and require the body to convert T4 to T3.
Indications[edit | edit source]
Armour Thyroid is indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is prescribed to individuals whose thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. It is also used in the management of thyroid cancer patients, to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, which could potentially fuel the growth of thyroid cancer cells. Additionally, Armour Thyroid is used in some cases for the treatment of goiter and as part of the diagnostic testing for thyroid function.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Armour Thyroid works by replacing or supplementing the thyroid hormones that are missing or in low supply in individuals with hypothyroidism. The T3 and T4 hormones in Armour Thyroid help restore normal metabolic activity in the body, which is crucial for regulating energy levels, body temperature, and overall organ function.
Dosage and Administration[edit | edit source]
The dosage of Armour Thyroid is individualized based on the patient's medical condition, response to treatment, and laboratory test results. It is typically taken orally, once daily, preferably on an empty stomach, to enhance absorption. Patients are advised to follow their healthcare provider's instructions closely when taking Armour Thyroid.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, Armour Thyroid can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include temporary hair loss, changes in appetite, weight changes, sensitivity to heat, nervousness, and irritability. More severe side effects, such as chest pain, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, and severe allergic reactions, should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Before taking Armour Thyroid, patients should inform their healthcare provider about any other medical conditions they have, especially heart disease, diabetes, adrenal gland problems, or any allergies. It is also important to discuss all medications, supplements, and herbal products being taken to avoid potential interactions.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Armour Thyroid may interact with other medications, such as insulin, anticoagulants, and antidepressants, potentially affecting their efficacy or increasing the risk of side effects. Patients should closely monitor their condition and report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider.
Conclusion[edit | edit source]
Armour Thyroid is a natural desiccated thyroid extract used in the treatment of hypothyroidism and other thyroid-related conditions. It provides both T3 and T4 thyroid hormones, offering an alternative to synthetic thyroid medications. Patients should work closely with their healthcare provider to determine the appropriate dosage and monitor for side effects.
